A relatively new commander of Rabbit Army (only 5 months) when Dragon Army received their orders for their very first battle, Carby was late to make commander (at 12 years old) and was therefore not as cocky as some who made it at eleven. Ender knew that Carby was a good soldier, but also knew that he would be using “formations” in his battle plans. After being thawed from losing that first battle, Carby came over to Ender and congratulated him, making a lasting impression on Ender. (Ender vowed that if he ever lost, he would remember to give honor where it was due… but hoped it wouldn’t be often!) Carby also greeted Ender in the commanders' mess afterwards, saying that he was in disgrace, and that “they won't believe me when I tell them you did things that nobody's ever seen before. So I hope you beat the snot out of the next army you fight. As a favor to me." To which Ender replied: “As a favor to you… and thanks for talking to me.” Carby admitted that Ender was being treated pretty badly as a newly inducted commander, since there were normally cheers … but then, it usually took a few battles before a commander acheieved his first victory! After that conversation, Ender mentally added him to his private list of people who also qualified as "human beings." When Carby graduated, Bean was assigned to relieve as Rabbit Army commander. Carby was sent to Tactical School, and met up with the rest of Ender’s team (jeesh) as they traveled to Command School.
