Petra was the first Salamander Ender met when he was assigned to his first Army. Petra was not necessarily popular with the rest of the army, though. She did, however, offer to give Ender some extra training, and taught Ender how to use his gun and several other Battle Room maneuvers, which he had not been able to master during his abbreviated stay with his launch group. Petra eventually became the commander of her own army (Pheonix), and was selected to be a part of Ender’s team at Command School.

After the war, she settled back with her parents, trying to live a normal life. After a year, she was kidnapped by Achilles along with several other members of Ender's Jeesh. She designed a dragon logo with an encrypted message, which was sent as a chain letter along the email network. The message was eventually found and decoded by Bean, who months later managed to lead a strike force from Thailand and rescue Petra, the only one who had not escaped or had been rescued previously. Afterwards, Petra fell in love with Bean and initiated a campaign to get Bean convinced to marry her, which eventually succeeded.

There was wide speculation about Petra as the only female member of Ender's Jeesh. She was the first one to break down during the battles, but she was also the one Ender relied most heavily on.
