Shadows in Flight was released on January 17th, 2012 and is the 5th installment of the Shadow series revolving around Julian (Bean) Delphinki. The novel is considerably shorter than most of the other Shadow series with the hardcover published by Tor being only 240 pages long. A sample first chapter was published on Card's digital magazine via his Hatrack website on November 28th, 2011.
The novel focuses on Bean and his three children Ender, Carlotta, and Cincinnatus who are traveling through space searching for a cure to their giganticism but stumble upon an abandoned Formic ship hovering above a habitable planet.
Unlike the previously titled Shadows in Flight book that was planned, Bean will not die in the first chapter. Additionally, it will not wrap up the Speaker and Shadow series. Rather, a separate book entitled Shadows Alive will serve as the wrap up novel to be released sometime after Shadows in Flight.
