Third was a derrogative term used to refer to children who had two older siblings, which was generally forbidden by the population laws reinforced by the Hegemony. Usually, if a couple gave birth to a Third, they were prosecuted and lost their jobs. Ender Wiggin, a talented boy whose fate was chosen by the government to be The One, was an exception to this harsh policy.
